Should organic carrots be orange or purple?

Posted by 1 on

This is an age old debate, should organic carrots be orange or purple? As many of you may know all carrots used to be purple in colour. That was until the late 16th century when the Dutch growers are thought to of mixed the normal purple carrots with mutant yellow and white carrots. The yellow and white 'mutant' carrots were not rare at the time, just not harvested as they did not contain the anthocyanins that the purple carrots did. This lead the growers to believe and they may well have been correct that they were not as good for you. So why did they continue with this 'cross breeding' of carrots? Well history will have us believe that it was to celebrate the Dutch 'House of Orange' struggle for independence but it may well also have been that the orange carrot was sweeter in taste and provided more flesh than the purple carrot meaning more money per unit. So which carrots are the most 'Organic'? Well as time has moved on you can use seeds for both or in fact for all of the colours previously mentioned. With some specialist suppliers you can have purple, orange, white or yellow. It depends on soil type and the temperature that you are going to be growing at. For us its the Cosmic Purple Carrot and not just because the name suggest a throw back to some early seventies party with Jimi Hendrix playing. Its because of the striking colour of the purple skin and the orange flesh with its crunchy, sweet taste with a hint of spice. But the main thing is that we can all grow them whatever the colour and be kind to the earth. You don't need a large garden or vegetable plot as they can be grown in containers or window boxes and if you harvest more than you can eat then they can be frozen for use later.
