Growing your own herbs

Posted by 1 on

What better way to ensure that you are eating wholesome food that is cost effective and free from harsh chemicals, than growing your own. This year as well as working incredibly hard we are planning on mixing our small cottage garden flowers with some herbs and vegetables so that we can provide some of our own food. We have a great source of compost in the garden having chickens but equally, as they free range this is going to present it's own challenges... Growing your own herbs you should be relatively straightforward. They can be grown in your flower beds, in pots making a nice arrangement, even by using a wagon wheel as a place holder. See what you have laying around your garage or garden and just get creative. It is vitally important that you use a good soil and compost. Ideally a compost bin using your garden and food waste should provide all of the nutrients that your herb garden will need. If you have been unsuccessful with a compost bin as we have I found a website that suggests you lay your compost materials where you plan to plant your herbs, cover with newspaper to retain any created heat - once rotten down you should have rich soil. Sun or shade... If you are lucky enough to have a couple of spots in your garden with different amounts of sun you can grow a wider range of herbs. Sun loving These are chives, oregano, lemon thyme and rosemary. Shade Loving Rocket, chervil, parsley and mustard.
